Classifying


All living things are divided into animal, fungus, single cell organism, and plants. These are called "Kingdoms."

The Plant Kingdom is divided into:
  1. Nonvascular Spore Plants
    1. mosses
    2. hornworts
    3. liverworts
  2. Vascular Spore Plants
    1.  clubmosses
    2. horsetails
    3. ferns
  3. Naked Seeds
    1. cycads
    2. Ginko
    3. conifers
    4. gnetums
  4. Ovary-enclosed seeds
4 "Ovary-enclosed seeds" is divided into:
  • monocotyledon (mostly grasses)
    • 1 seed leaf, 
    • parallel veins in the leaves, 
    • horizontal rootstalks, 
    • usually simple branching, 
    • floral parts mostly in 3's
  • dicotyledon 
    • two sided leaves
    • netted veins in the leaves
    • usually tap-rooted
    • usually complex branching
    • floral parts mostly in the 4's and 5's
Monocots are divided into:
  1. Mustards (4 petals and 6 stamen- 4 tall, 2 short)
  2. Mint (square stalks and opposite leaves, often aromatic)
  3. Parsley (Compound umbels, usually hollow flower stalks)
  4. Pea (Banner, wings and keel. Pea-like pods, often with pinnate leaves.)
  5. Lily (Flowers with parts in threes. Sepals and petals usually identical.)
  6. Mallow (5 seperate petals and column of stamens. Mucilaginous texture.)
  7. Sunflower/Aster (Composite flowers in disk-like heads)
